Government Investigations

United States Secret Service

Beyond its protective mission, the Secret Service serves as the original guardian of the nation's financial payment systems. The agency is world-renowned for performing some of the most complex, technical investigations into financially-motivated cybercrime organizations threatening global financial infrastructure. The Secret Service has recovered over $2 billion in pandemic-related stolen funds and leads nationwide efforts investigating transnational fraud schemes.

Financial Crimes Jurisdiction

The Secret Service has statutory jurisdiction to investigate: credit and debit card fraud; access device fraud (the agency holds primary authority); identity theft; false identification fraud; counterfeit currency and checks; financial institution fraud; and telecommunications fraud.

These investigations address counterfeit, but increasingly focus on credit card fraud, wire and bank fraud, computer network breaches, ransomware, and cyber-enabled financial crimes.

Cyber Fraud Task Forces

Cyber Fraud Task Forces are the focal point of Secret Service cyber investigative efforts—partnerships with other law enforcement agencies, prosecutors, private industry, and academia. These strategically located task forces combat cybercrime through prevention, detection, mitigation, and investigation. The Secret Service operates 42 domestic CFTF locations with international locations in London and Rome, expanding to 160 offices globally.

Current enforcement priorities include: Business Email Compromise (BEC) fraud affecting organizations worldwide; cryptocurrency fraud and approval phishing scams; ransomware infrastructure (the Secret Service contributed to AlphV and Hive takedowns); money mule networks transferring illegally obtained funds; and pandemic fraud schemes targeting unemployment and relief programs.

Strategic Federal Defense Starts Early
