Government Investigations

Homeland Security Investigations

Homeland Security Investigations is the principal investigative component of the Department of Homeland Security. With more than 7,100 special agents across 235 cities in the United States and an international presence spanning 80 locations in 53 countries, HSI conducts federal criminal investigations into the illegal movement of people, goods, money, contraband, weapons, and sensitive technology into, out of, and through the United States.

What HSI Investigates

HSI leverages broad statutory authorities to investigate: terrorism and national security threats; narcotics and contraband smuggling; transnational gang activity; child exploitation; human smuggling and trafficking; illegal exports of controlled technology and weapons; money laundering; financial fraud and cyber-financial crimes; intellectual property theft; trade fraud; organized retail crime; identity and benefit fraud; and human rights violations including war crimes.

How HSI Protects Communities

HSI initiated 1,686 criminal investigations related to sex trafficking and forced labor in FY 2024, leading to 2,545 arrests. The agency plays a crucial role in investigating financial fraud targeting vulnerable populations, and specialized criminal organizations offering money laundering as a service to other criminals are priority targets.
